Originally named the 'Brighton Marine Palace Pier' abreviated to 'Palace Pier', it has been more recently renamed 'Brighton Pier'
Construction was slow, and conditional upon the removal of the old Chain Pier, which, fortuitously, was destroyed during a storm in December 1896.
It opened, as an open deck, to the public in May 1899, with covered pavilions being added from 1901 onwards.
It continues to thrive, having adapted to modern pressures and offers seaside delights to those who enjoy the tradition.
